At ground level, the area is dominated by a native species of grass Sheep's Fescue (Festuca ovina).  However, alien Rhododendron ponticum is the second most dominant species, covering more area than any of the remaining 14 species on the Mound and almost half as much area as Festuca ovina.  With the mature trees Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is by far the most dominant species.  Note however that there are very few young Betula pendula, only 1.3% of ground cover in the area is due to the species.
